WE LOVE SAPPHIRE!!!! (And AMD, as well :D )

Howdy folks!

Some of you may be aware of the donation by Cooler Master, earlier this school year. Well, after some discussion with representatives from Sapphire (the manufacturer of AMD’s FirePro line of workstation graphics cards), we received these!!!!

Two W7100 and one W5100 graphics cards, generously donated by Sapphire!

These W7100 cards will go into the two Dedicated CAD computers for our design group, while the W5100 will reside in the Programming/General Purpose machine.

The video cards have already been installed, and the change is absolutely noticeable! Models load seamlessly, and this is, by far, the  most powerful machines we have ever seen! For those of you who may not know, we use SolidWorks to create the designs for our robot, like this

These tools require graphics cards on a completely different level than what you might find in your run of the mill computer, or even high end gaming PC. While a higher end “gaming” GPU would be able to run SolidWorks fairly smoothly, a Workstation Class is designed to handle this sort of program with ease. Up until this year, we had used Workstation Laptops, with built-in workstation-class GPUs, however they were definitely showing their age, and when loading up a model as complex as a robot, may take 5 – 10 minutes to fully render everything.

Now, the robot load and renders withing a fraction of a second!

Thank you, so much!!

We love Sapphire!
